Providing up-to-date, evidence-based care for stimulant use disorders begins with ongoing education and training of care teams. Education & Training Opportunities
- Educational Resources
Talking to Patients About Stimulant Use
- Findings from our study indicated that patient-provider communication about stimulant use and treatment options can be difficult and can impact patient treatment engagement. The Center for Community-Engaged Drug Education, Epidemiology and Research (CEDEER) at the University of Washington created a helpful handout and guide to assist care teams (e.g., providers, peers, etc.) in talking with patients about their stimulant use.
Who is qualified to prescribe medications for substance use disorders?
- Controlled substances (e.g., buprenorphine): Any licensed provider who is registered with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and has completed the DEA-required training
- Any medical provider applying for or renewing their DEA registration to prescribe controlled substances must attest that they have completed the training in their DEA application form.

Screening, Assessment, and Treatment Guidelines for Stimulant Use Disorders
- The clinical practice guideline from the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP)/American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) offers evidence-based recommendations for the treatment of stimulant use disorders. It provides clear guidance for healthcare providers on identification, diagnosis, and a range of treatment options to support effective, person-centered care for patients with stimulant use disorder, offered in both a pocket guide and a full PDF guide.
