Representatives from Be Well Texas visited the Alcohol & Drug Awareness Council Recovery Support Services at Darmy’s Place in Lufkin on Wednesday to see how local recovery services are delivered in Deep East Texas.

Richard Hamner, program manager, and Paul Salinas, senior project coordinator, traveled from the Be Well Texas office in San Antonio to meet with ADAC executive director Phyllis Grandgeorge and recovery coaches Justin Holland and Destiny Mettlen.

They toured Darmy’s Place to learn how ADAC delivers recovery support services for individuals seeking to maintain recovery and lead productive lives free from substance use.

ADAC personnel shared how their program is successful because of the many community partnerships with agencies such as United Way, schools, Child Protective Services, city and county officials, drug courts and many others.

The Be Well reps were told, “Strengthening individuals in recovery makes our community a safer and healthier place.”

ADAC receives state funding through Be Well Texas to provide local recovery support services across 12 rural counties in Deep East Texas. Be Well Texas is a statewide program through UT Health San Antonio that oversees state and federally funded substance use and mental health services across all 11 regions and 254 counties in Texas.

The visit was part of Be Well Texas’ ongoing oversight of how those funds are used and how recovery services are reaching communities across the state.

The visit also gave people in both organizations a chance to exchange ideas and learn from one another as they work to strengthen recovery support across the state.
